Winter Solstice Concert Features
Holiday Classics and Solstice Tribute

This year’s Annual Old Town Center for the Arts “Winter Solstice Concert” will feature some of the world’s favorite Christmas melodies, original songs and a special visual, musical tribute to honor our indigenous ancestors, in observation of the ancient winter solstice ritual.

For this special event, OTCA Co-Director William Eaton will be joined by Robin Miller, Susannah Martin and Patrick Ki, who are collectively known as the MMK Trio, and special guest flutist Claudia Tulip.

The “Solstice Ensemble” will present their arrangements of classic Christmas songs, including: Let It Snow, Silver Bells, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, Winter Wonderland, O’ Holy Night, and Silent Night. In addition, they will present several eclectic instrumental arrangements of: We Three Kings, Coventry Carol, Little Drummer Boy and What Child Is This. Robin Miller also brings two of his original compositions that have become well loved anthems – entitled Candlelight and Children of Peace.

The eclectic trio of Miller, Martin & Ki features the work of two virtuoso acoustic guitarists combined with rich lead vocals and harmonies and featuring original bluesy and classic rock repertoire. In addition to having busy individual recording and performing careers, the members of this trio come together to create a dynamic synergy, full of fun energy and musical versatility.

Robin Miller brings a powerful blues and rock based guitar sound to the group, full of fiery solos, honed by over forty years of professional experience. As a prolific songwriter, Robin has also written several of the original songs performed by the group.

Patrick Ki is a formally trained classical and jazz guitarist who brings a more lyrical-based guitar & ukulele sound to the ensemble, influenced by his Hawaiian island upbringing. He also drives a strong and deep groove to propel the group, and adds his wry humor as emcee.

With an ability to sing in several different languages and to improvise fluidly, vocalist Susannah Martin gives the band a unique feminine flair. She wails on R&B or Rock tunes, delivers a touch of sultry jazz and sings fluently in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. Susannah also adds a groovy beat on cajón and hand percussion.

William Eaton is a musician and instrument maker whose imaginative harp guitars and multi-stringed instruments have been recognized worldwide. William is a four-time GRAMMY nominee and is the 2015 Arizona Governor’s Arts Award recipient in the artist category.

Classically trained, jazz influenced and world music inspired, Claudia Tulip performs on silver and ethnic flutes, and panpipes. One reviewer commented, “Claudia’s sound is a beautiful blend of imagination, deft technique and soulful expression.” Claudia has enjoyed a successful solo career and has also been a member of the William Eaton Ensemble since 1987.

Come enjoy a special evening of holiday music, a pre-show vintage Christmas postcard slide show, and lovely holiday images projected during the concert, in the warm vintage elegance of Old Town Center for the Arts on Saturday, December 17th at 7:00 pm.
