Austin Ladd Roberts brings Americana-Roots music to OTCA

Art exhibit begins 6:30 pm

National touring singer - songwriter - fingerstyle Guitarist Austin Ladd Roberts brings his acclaimed Americana-Roots Every Song is a Conversation tour to the Old Town Center for the Arts on Saturday, January 29 at 7:30 pm. Joining Austin will be duo partner Patti Pannell, who can “hold her weight with the divas of country music” and special guest Don Whitcher. Doors will open at 6:30 pm with a special art exhibit presented by Goldenstein Gallery featuring the renowned art of David DeVary.

What is Americana Roots Music?

It’s music that comes from the heart and soul of this country, and Austin Ladd Roberts, Patti Pannell and Don Whitcher have got it. This concert will bring the best of acoustic guitar, vocals and songwriting to the stage and will include excerpts from Austin’s acclaimed one-man Cowboy Musical Shall We Gather.

West Texas born and raised, Austin Ladd is a fifth-generation Texan which flavors, as he calls it, his music. Not quite country, not quite folk, with a guitar style that rests nicely between James Taylor and Chet Atkins. His vocals have been described as Gordon Lightfoot meets Lyle Lovett. And he’s kept pretty fine company, playing and recording with such luminaries as Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Merle Haggard, Joe Ely, Leon Russell, Nanci Griffith, The Byrds, Lyle Lovett and many other legends of the Americana and Roots music scene. Austin Ladd is well-known in the Sedona area and has been featured in several Moonlight Madness events and at Sedona's Goldenstein Gallery.

Joining Austin Ladd will be Patti Pannell, from Fullerton, California. Reviews of Patty include comparisons from Zepplin to Heart... Chrissie Hynde to Patsy Cline... Blondie to Bonnie Raitt... and from Hank Williams to Lucinda Williams. Patti's voice is not just big and her lyrics are not just full and lush, they have a depth that is rare. Then, when she has you captured with sensitivity, she'll take you down a rocky, bluesy road and leave you wanting more.

Austin and Patti’s latest CD, Blowing Back to Me has received accolades and airplay around the world. Bob Legget of the west coast's Music Connection Magazine states; “...Hard-driving at times, and reflective when necessary, their voices combined to form a sweet sound... with well-written lyrics, impressive finger-picking, vocals that bowl you over and an intense delivery of emotion, Pannell and Roberts are a force to be reckoned with, and an act not to be missed.”

Opening for Austin and Patti, Lap steel and slide impresario Don Whitcher will perform, adding his roots-based texture to the evening. He’s been compared to Greg Brown, Steve Earle, and Johnny Cash all rolled into one, quite a compliment. Don is adept at many facets of Americana music, whether he is evoking the haunting echoes of a Mississippi night on slide or the biting edge of a Texas thunder storm on steel guitar. He paints music like the plaintive cries of old ghosts sweeping down from North Dakota into a Southwestern monsoon. Don is a local favorite, with National exposure, and has the distinction of making the Americana and Roots Country charts. He has played many events in Old Town Cottonwood, including the Holiday Blues Revue, Old Town Association’s Cowboy Cruiz’-In, and headlining his own solo show at OTCA. For those who’ve heard Don, they know he is Old Town’s best kept secret, with a voice and songs that are full of soul, empathy, and emotion.

Come enjoy an evening of Americana Roots Music, at the Old Town Center for the Arts. You are also invited to come at 6:30 PM and enjoy a special art exhibit featuring the exquisite art of David DeVary, known for painting cowboys and cowgirls with attitude. DeVary embraces the confidence and mystery of this American icon and paints them as such using copper, silver or gold leafing. Complimentary wine tasting will be available during the exhibit hour, the concert will begin at 7:30 pm.
