Spring into Laughter with the Abandoned Minds

If you are looking for some light entertainment, you will be glad that The Abandoned Minds Improv Troupe returns to the stage on Friday, March 12th, 7:30 pm at the Old Town Center For The Arts in a show they’ve titled “March Gladness”. With St. Patty’s day, the first day of spring, and hoops aplenty on their way, the Abandoned Minds is digging into March to expose all possibilities for fun and humor.

The troupe’s forte is its ability to take the audience on an imaginative roller coaster ride throughout the evening via comedy and drama. They give the audience a full Improv theatre experience, including a short form game style, and a long form style that is a 20 minute organic play based on an audience suggestion. The short form game is similar to Drew Carey’s TV show Who’s Line Is It Anyway? The Abandoned Minds delights audiences with breezy, spontaneous comedy created in the moment. Unlike sketch or standup comedy, nothing is rehearsed, scripted or planned ahead.

“Improv is an interactive experience,” says troupe member Brad Luky. “What makes our shows so special is the outrageous input of our audience. People plant seeds with each of their suggestions, and we grow them into full blown scenes that often surprise even us.”

The troupe follows the Del Close method of improv acting, which emphasizes the “group mind” that mysteriously develops during a performance. Quickly, the player’s minds become fused together to create a “super mind” where they practically finish each other’s sentences.

“It is an interesting phenomenon to witness, and remarkably creative,” OTCA Co-Director William Eaton commented. “Their wit and humor is contagious, and they are gaining quite a following.”

“Coming to Improv shows is my laugh therapy,” says Amy Vaughn of Sedona. “I never miss a show.”

For over seven years the Abandoned Minds have been performing “out of their minds” comedy throughout Northern Arizona and the troupe has grown to become a very tight ensemble. The Super Minds of this group are Marah Adelson, Tony Carito, Derek Dujardin, Brad Luky, Karen Kiefer, Chad Graff, Tom Puetz, Shaeri Richards, and Lori Shupp.
