Holiday Cheer Gone Weird

If the holidays have you reaching for the eggnog a little too early, Zenprov Comedy has the perfect remedy: laughter. Their one-night-only, totally improvised holiday comedy spectacular hits the stage Friday, Dec. 12!

“It’s been a weird year. So, let’s embrace the weirdness with an open heart, a belly full of laughs and a spirit of love,” said Derek Dujardin, the director of Zenprov Comedy. “In this show, we’ll lampoon everything: From petty family dramas to elves being replaced by Amazon robots, it is all fair game for funny.”

Along with a sleigh full of brand-new, fast-paced games, Zenprov will perform Christmas films with suggestions from the audience. Four “movie directors” will have actors improvise opening scenes of holiday themes based on classics such as Hallmark rom-coms, Scrooge, National Lampoon Christmas, Krampus, or a holiday musical starring only animated misfit toys. After Act 1, directors will pitch why their film shouldn’t be cut from the show. The audience votes to see which three films will get the “greenlight” until only the funniest film is left.

With nearly 20 years of performances, Zenprov Comedy is a local favorite that taps into the rich source material that comes from living in a place steeped in spiritual seeking, UFOs, vortexes, self-help gurus, radical vegans and confused tourists lost in roundabouts. Jessica Mitolo, an Associate Artistic Director at Second City, coaches Zenprov. “I work with improv troupes from all over the world, and Zenprov is one of my favorites. Since 2020, I’ve enjoyed coaching them through a creative renaissance. They are a true ensemble that hits that sweet spot of being both silly and insightful. A joy and a treat not to be missed.”

Zenprov Comedy embraces the Del Close method of improv acting, which emphasizes the “group mind” that mysteriously develops during a performance. Miraculously, the players’ minds fuse to create a “super mind” where they practically finish each other’s sentences - and often do. Laughter ensues.

The super minds of Zenprov Comedy are Derek Dujardin, Shaeri Richards, Shaunn Cochran, Chris Redish, Betty Testa, Linda Roemer, Nathaniel Montgomery, Mary Carder, Ryan Rice and Nick Shan.
