Cottonwood Idol

Do you sing?  Do you like performing for an audience? Do you want to take your singing talent to a new level? Make your dreams come true by auditioning for Cottonwood Idol, a vocal competition open to all residents of the Verde Valley and Sedona, 8 years and older.

Vocal auditions will take place at Old Town Center for the Arts (OTCA), Saturday, November 16th, at 11:00 am and Sunday, November 17th at 6:00 pm. Contestants will compete in three age categories. The Junior Rising Star division will include contestants between 8 and 12 years of age. Contestants between 13 and 18 years of age will compete in the Rising Star division. Adults 19 years and up will compete for the “Cottonwood Idol” title. There will also be runners-up in each category.

For the auditions contestants will sing accapella, without using backing tracks. A panel of professional judges made up of Jeanie Carroll, Tom Jepperson and Dev Ross will select the top 20 finalists to compete at OTCA on Sunday, January 5th. Fifteen finalists will then be selected to go on to the next performance on Sunday, January 12th. From those fifteen finalists, ten will be selected to compete on Sunday, January 19th, and the top five chosen will perform Sunday, January 26th. The winner will be named Cottonwood Idol, and will be given performance opportunities including opening for a future show at Old Town Center for the Arts. The Top 20 will receive t-shirts and the Top 3 will receive additional prizes.

The Cottonwood Idol vocal competition is a progression from the successful Sedona Sunrise Superstar contests held the past four years as a fund raising event for the Sedona Sunrise Center for Adults.   Founders Cindy Holcombe and Linda Yee decided this year to “pass the torch” and target another worthy organization, the Adult Care Services, Inc. a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing Quality Care, Quality Service and Quality of Life since 1982.  Adult Care Services will open the Susan J. Rheem Adult Day Center (SJRC) in Cottonwood, at 636 N. Main St. in January 2014. This will be the third SJRC location, joining two already in operation in Prescott and Prescott Valley.

Talented singer, actor, musician Shondra Jepperson will again emcee the competition this year.  Shondra along with Patrick Schweiss, Jeanie Carroll, Sammy Davis, Dev Ross, Kenny Star and Jim Buchanon have made tremendous contributions of personal time and professional expertise to launch the competition series known for the past four years as the popular “Sedona Sunrise Superstar Contest”.

“We’re honored to be the host this year for Cottonwood Idol,” commented William Eaton, co-Director of Old Town Center for the Arts. “A lot of people have volunteered over the past few years to launch this program.  It’s a great way to raise funds, awareness, and provide a showcase for the emerging talent in our community.”

Sponsors already on board for this event include: Mark Tufte, manager of Cottonwood Country Bank, KUDOS, Verde Independent Editor Dan Engler, and Old Town Center for the Arts.  We need everyone’s support.  If you are interested in becoming a donor or sponsor for this event please contact:  Cindy at 928-300-9860 or send an email to cholcombe14@earthlink.net.
