A Ton of Feathers Offers a Ton of Fun

For music lovers wanting to experience something entirely different, the Old Town Center for the Arts is pleased to present, A One Man Musical Oddity. Featuring multi-instrumentalist and improvisational artist, Dave Rentz, who combines music, percussion, comedy, audience participation, plus whatever happens to pop into Rentz’s fertile imagination at any moment.

Blending music, comedy, percussion and audience participation, A One Man Musical Oddity is full of surprises that delight and wow audience members of all ages.

Surrounding himself with musical instruments from around the world - and a variety of toys and props - Rentz plays, sings, drums, puns and jokes his way into the hearts of listeners of all ages. Moving from one instrument to another, and often playing several at once, Rentz leads listeners on a musical journey which includes lots of detours into delightful, unexpected places. The audience never knows what Rentz is going to do next - and neither does he. His improvisational approach ensures that no two shows are ever alike.

Curious instruments in Rentz’s repertoire include thumb piano, boom wackers, dulcimer and bazouki. Rentz also uses aboriginal instruments like Native American flutes and African drums to transport the audience to exotic places. Sometimes he’ll move through the audience playing one of his Australian didgeridoos at close range so that you not only hear the music up close, but actually feel the vibrations as well. Rentz also uses a digital loop station which allows him to play one instrument, then layer other instruments on top, creating a montage of sound that can be relaxing and meditative or downright funny. These unique sonic sketches often turn into elaborately layered masterpieces that capture the imaginations of listeners for a few amazing minutes, then with the push of a button, are gone forever.

“The show is a lot of fun,” said Pame Lynn, “Dave has all these amazing instruments and toys and you never know what he’s going to do with them next. He is very creative.”

“I try to make A One – Man Musical Oddity enjoyable for people of all ages,” says Rentz. “It’s definitely a show that’s family friendly.”

A resident of the Verde Valley for over 20 years, Rentz performs regularly at nursing homes and local schools, and is available for private parties, family reunions, meetings and other social gatherings,
Packed with percussion, surprises, peculiar instruments, and music from around the world, A One Man Musical Oddity is definitely a ton of performance-art fun. Bring some entertainment, fun and whimsy into your life on Friday, February 5, at 7:30 PM.
