Classi-native Jazz-menco? You Heard it Here First!

Like a rain-scented monsoon wind rising out of the Sonoran Desert, Gabriel Ayala & Will Clipman bring a breath of refreshment to adventurous audiences in search of a new experience in sound. On the wings of their recently-released Canyon Records CD Passion, Fire & Grace, Ayala & Clipman are taking the landscape of contemporary instrumental music by storm, and are poised to make the entire world their stage. They are coming to the stage at the Old Town Center for the Arts on Saturday, October 23rd at 7:30PM. Fans of such diverse musicians and composers as Chick Corea, Paco de Lucia, Vicente Amigo, and Carlos Santana will thrill to their genre-transcending explorations. This show is possible through the generous sponsorship of the Salt River Materials Group.

Founded on the original compositions of classically-trained guitar virtuoso Gabriel Ayala, the duo’s repertoire also embraces the passion of flamenco, the improvisation of jazz, and the beat of world music. Ayala’s deep grounding in his traditional Yaqui culture lends the duo’s sound a uniquely Native American spirit that subtly infuses its distinctly contemporary approach with an ancient resonance.

Ayala is an advocate for education, instilling his values of living a traditional lifestyle while abstaining from alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Gabriel believes in leading our children in the right direction through his philosophy, “Honor your elders, love your children, and respect your women”.

Holding the heartbeat for the duo, Will Clipman brings a pan-gobal palette of percussion to the mix that enlivens the groove with an irresistibly polyrhythmic pulse and seasons it with rich layers of exotic texture. Will began playing his father’s drums and his mother’s piano at the age of three, and has mastered a pan-global palette of over one hundred percussion instruments in addition to the traditional drumset.

The result is a sound much larger, broader, and deeper than the term duo suggests.

Ayala and Clipman are regarded individually as elite artists on the Canyon Records label. In addition to his self-released earlier recordings, Ayala’s two Canyon solo CDs Portraits and Remembrance have earned him international accolades and garnered numerous nominations and awards, including the Native American Music Award, The Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Award, the Canadian Aboriginal Music Award, and the Indian Summer Music Award.

A five-time GRAMMY® Nominee and two-time native American Music Award Winner, Clipman has appeared on over twenty-five Canyon Records releases, and well over fifty albums in all. His first solo Canyon Records CD Pathfinder was honored with a GRAMMY® Nomination for Best New Age Album. Will is also a two time Tammie Award Winner, and a two time Arizona Governor’s Arts Awards Nominee, and has been inducted into the Tucson Musicians Museum for his contributions to the musical community in his hometown. Will has recorded over 50 albums, including 25 for Canyon Records, where he is regarded as the house percussionist.

So the advent of Passion, Fire & Grace is being hailed as a summit meeting of two masterful recording artists at the peak of their creative powers, and the standing ovations and encores at their recent concerts in Santa Fe NM and Tucson AZ attest to their appeal as live performers. While it will not be officially released by Canyon Records until early 2011, a limited number of pre-release copies of Passion, Fire & Grace are available for purchase directly from the artists at their live shows, and the duo will be available to meet-and-greet and sign CDs immediately following their concert at OTCA.

This exclusive central Arizona appearance is your chance to savor the classi-native jazz-menco flavor of Gabriel Ayala & Will Clipman, enhanced by the impeccable acoustic environment and gorgeous lighting design of Old Town Center for the Arts.
