He’s Out of His Mime!

Nationally-known theater-mime-artist David Barker, whose works have delighted audiences since 1977, brings his solo show "Out Of My Mime" to the Old Town Center for the Arts in Cottonwood, on Saturday, January 23rd at 7:30 PM. David’s solo mime show was the opening event at OTCA in October 2008. After the performance, and a long standing ovation, several audience members promptly reported to staff, “You have to bring him back for another show, we’ll each bring 10 friends.” So here is your second opportunity to see this show, and bring your friends. William Eaton, Co-Director at Old Town Center for the Arts remarked, “His presentation is hilarious, and could be billed as a comedy show. People love to laugh, it feels good. David is very creative with his ability to combine the art of movement and mime, which is fascinating in itself, with incredibly funny vignettes.”

Barker, an alumnus of the Claude Kipnis Mime Theatre in New York, and founder of the Aurora Mime Theatre in Arizona, has performed throughout the United States, Mexico and Shanghai and has been featured in several television commercials. His performances have been hailed by critics as "brilliant" and "absolutely mesmerizing." "Out Of My Mime" combines several movement styles into a stunning program of mime, clowning and masks. Using contemporary and classical music, as well as the occasional spoken word, Barker creates an evening of separate skits, ranging from slapstick comedy to satire and compelling drama.

"Out Of My Mime" includes performances of "Blockhead," a mask creature inspired by the famous mask troupe Mummenschanz, in which Barker rearranges his facial expression with the help of the audience. There is also "Daydreamer," the story of a mild-mannered bookworm with a penchant for fantasy and "The Bad Hair Day," a comic look at a common daily frustration.

David Barker is an award-winning actor, director and fight choreographer. Also an accomplished mime, his work has been featured in numerous publications including From The Greek Mimes To Marcel Marceau And Beyond, Shanghai Theatre Magazine, Mime Journal and Phoenix Magazine. His credits include national and international tours, Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional theatre, international festivals and TV. David has conducted master classes, workshops and residencies at universities, conservatories and public schools throughout the country and in London, Athens and Shanghai. David will be teaching a master class at Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood, on Friday, January 22nd for Theater Director James Ball’s classes.

Presently, Mr. Barker is a Professor of Theatre at Arizona State University where he teaches movement and acting and serves as the Coordinator of the MFA Performance Program. He is the author of Connected Motion: A Common Sense Approach To Movement Training For Actors. The legendary Broadway director, Marsall Mason, called Barker an “extraordinary and enlightening performer.”

Last November David performed at Old Town Center for the Arts in his one man play “Dodging Bullets,” a riveting, life changing account of a brain surgeon brother-in-law’s attempt to kill Barker and his sister.

Don't miss "Out Of My Mime," an entertaining presentation of performance art, comedy, and theatre.
